Life Isn't On A Schedule
Learning Shouldn't Be Either

Are You Putting Your Life On Hold?

"Children on the unschooling path don't distinguish, they don't divide life into a period of preparing for the future followed by a period of living that future. They don't distinguish between 'learning' and 'doing.' That's true when they're children — that's true when they're 'grown up.'"
Dr. Peter Gray, Boston College

⦿ Juggling your school schedule with your gymnastics practices?
⦿ High school classes getting in the way of your internship or job?
⦿ Ready for college but all that high school stuff is in the way?
⦿ Your passion is photography, not verified math or history credits?
⦿ Classes don't move at the pace you want?
⦿ Feel like a square peg in a round hole?

Maybe It's Time to Take Control

Embark Center for Self-Directed Education understands and believes learning and life go together. Not only do we do away with the learning/doing separation, we dispense with all schedules when it comes to education, approaching all experiences on a spectrum. This is in contrast with the rigid age-segregated and age-normed structure of teaching in K-12 schools.

Classes—Activities—Internships

Our members enjoy a wide variety of learning experiences in the form of classes, one-on-one learning, and activities, inside and outside our building — all on their individual schedules. Members decide on the classes that match their passions and choose their own pace. Mentors work with them to develop needed resources from the local and online community. And, unlike school classes, when the learners decide they are finished with that part of their learning, the class goes away.

Our young people do the same with their other self-directed learning experiences, whether it's connecting with a tutor to prepare for a college entrance exam or becoming skilled in photography or finding an internship in a career path they're passionate about or creating a structure that works around other passions like music and artistic performance, professional athletics, or opening a culinary business. Or maybe it's just time to move on from a school schedule that doesn't meet the goals, capabilities, and interests of the learner...

Embark Center's approach is pretty simple. We focus on meaningful education and let go of the one-size-fits-all approach that young people don't like and that gets in the way of learning. Call us if you or your child is a square peg trying to fit into the round hole of traditional school.
